About garage door and opener recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) publishes recalls for garage door openers, remotes, springs and hardware. Each notice lists the affected model numbers, dates and the remedy, which is often a free repair or replacement from the manufacturer.
Openers made before 1993
Federal safety rules (16 CFR Part 1211) have required residential garage door openers manufactured since January 1, 1993 to include external entrapment protection such as photo-eye sensors or a door edge sensor. An older opener without these is a safety risk even if it hasn't been recalled.
Test your door's safety reverse
- Place a roll of paper towels or a piece of wood on the floor where the door closes. The door must reverse when it touches it.
- Wave an object through the photo-eye beam while the door closes. It must reverse.
If either test fails, stop using the opener until it's fixed. See Garage Door Safety Inspection and Garage Door Opener Installation.
